A Tank Tram is a tram ‘disguised’ as tank, used as a war bond fundraising stunt from 1918.  The stunt is being revived and the Tank Tram as a focal point for a current debate about the relationship between new technology and war.

 

As part of the First World War Centenary Commemorations at Salford Art Gallery & Museum and University of Salford at Media City, members of Manchester Tramway Museum Society the Tank Tram Society’s engineering students and Blackpool and Fylde College have been working on a replica (an exhibition tank) of the replica (a Tank Tram) of the original Tank.

 

Alongside this, performance students have worked with Richard Talbot and Carran Waterfield of Triangle Theatre to devise performance elements. Media students have been documenting the process, and Graphic Design students have worked on exhibition panel design with professional designer Val Evans.

 

Albert The Tank Tram as a project is a focus for interdisciplinary collaboration within the University of Salford. It was funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Manchester Tramway Services Ltd, The Heritage Lottery Fund, Salford University Students' Union, and The School of Arts & Media
