Museum Clowning, 2002-2018
The Clown Who Lost His Memory, alongside the Whissell and Williams projects, have initiated a body of work and two bodies - or alter-egos - Kurt Zarniko and Mr Whissell. The work (with them) investigates museological and archival practices and performer training. This website and the practical performances which are documented can be understood as promoting the characteristics of the clownesque as a means to construct original commemorative projects - both personal and institional.
With many collaborators, and especially with Carran Waterfield, I find I am developing a practice which attempts to divert the memorial tendency towards piety, homage and mourning in favour of parody and comical inversion. The process attempts to reframe concepts and ideologies so that we can begin to comprehend them differently, perhaps naively, but in a refreshing way, I hope. In particular I am interested in narrative forms, processes and media that allow us to celebrate and accept states of stupidity, laughter, and even abjection.
